5th European Symposium by NEREUS Regions: Highlights & Follow-Up

Unlocking the potential of satellite data alongside High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence to foster regional development and innovation was at the heart of the 5th European Symposium by NEREUS Regions, held in Bologna on October 22–23, 2026. Organized by the Emilia-Romagna Region and the NEREUS Network (Network of European Regions Using Space Technologies), in collaboration with ART-ER and SIMPLER (Enterprise Europe Network), this year’s edition underscored the strategic role of regions in Europe’s digital and green transitions. The event emphasized how space data - managed and empowered by AI and HPC - can reinforce European technological sovereignty and resilience through robust data governance models, reliable infrastructures, and coordinated public policies.

The Symposium brought together high-level institutional keynotes—including Michele de Pascale (President of the Emilia-Romagna Region), Vincenzo Colla (Vice-President of the Emilia-Romagna Region), Thierry Cotelle (President of the NEREUS Network), and Apostolia Karamali (Space Advisor in the Cabinet of European Commissioner Andrius Kubilius) - alongside technical insights from ESA, ECMWF, European AI Factories, and NEREUS member regions.

More than 240 participants along the 2 days of the Symposium, attended the 6 plenary sessions and the 2 interactive moments, where over 90 Business-to-Government (B2G) matchmaking meetings took place, connecting 42 solution providers from 11 countries with public authorities to address 16 concrete territorial challenges,  and about 65 participants participated in thematic round tables. The final part of the event saw the participation of the attendees to technical visits to the ECMWF Data Center, the Leonardo Supercomputer, and the Medicina Radio Astronomy Station.

The event closed with the official handover ceremony to the Polish regions of Podkarpackie and Małopolska, who will co-host the 6th European Symposium by NEREUS Regions on September 2–3, 2027.
