COAST
Coastal risks monitoring associated with a storm surge event
ID: #01-EMILIAROMAGNA
Oct 22, 2026
Organization: Emilia-Romagna Region - Geological Area (Region)

Brief description of the Organization launching the Challenge:
Emilia-Romagna Region - Geological Area: Knowledge concerning coastal risks and sea planning

Region:
Emilia-Romagna (Italy)

Description of the Challenge:
The Geological Unit of Emilia-Romagna Region collaborates with the Regional Civil Protection Department in the assessment of coastal and hydrogeological risk, early warning activities, and emergency management. Its work includes the analysis of meteo-marine and coastal morphodynamic forecasts, the implementation and continuous updating of storm surge impact databases, and the production of post-event reports, documenting coastal impacts and morphodynamic evolution.
The systematic collection of data throughout the entire event chain, from forecast scenarios to the post-event monitoring and impact assessment, is essential for supporting risk evaluation and enhancing forecast capabilities.
Particular emphasis should be placed on increasing the availability of near-real-time remote sensing data and high-resolution Digital Terrain Models (DTMs). These tools are crucial for improving the assessment of storm-induced morphological changes, coastal flooding, erosion processes, and their associated impacts on coastal areas.

Your Challenge in just one question:
Rapid ongoing and post-storm events acquisition of imagery and DTMs to assess coastal morphological changes and impacts.
